Too experienced for learning?

Have you learnt anything new recently? The idea of lifelong learning, was pioneered by adult education and social philosopher, Eduard Lindeman, in the nineteenth century, who believed ongoing education should run parallel with and throughout life. For Lindeman, the whole of life was about learning, therefore education should have no defined ending. He recognised that learning is nourishing and beneficial for us, and that education is something of huge value for the young and for adults alike. When we look at the structure of a school, we may consider that the youngest in the community have the most to learn, indeed as the nursery children grapple with their phonics and the complex world of social interaction, a long and exciting journey of learning lies ahead. But what of those, dare I say, ‘older and wiser’ stakeholders? What learning is there for those who are further down the learning road… such as senior leaders and school governors? Thankfully, vast learning and development resources and training have been available to senior leaders for many years and CPD is a key part and parcel of school life. But what about school Governors? How much learning and training is available for them? Or is it possible that we have fallen under the misapprehension that they are so experienced that they do not have any more to learn?

At LSC, we have been working with and supporting school governors for many years, most recently through our #Betterboards programme. Perhaps the concept of #betterboards might not sit comfortably with you? It might suggest room for improvement? Would you join a #betterparents or #betterpartner programme? Food for thought, there. We recognise that acknowledging that there is room for improvement is hard, but this is something we expect of our pupils on a daily basis, to strive to do better and be better, in pursuit of individual self-development. As adults should we apply this same philosophy, despite chalking up the years of experience? We are hopeful that you will recognise this desire for improvement, and if so, do consider joining our next cohort of #betterboards in May. Past attendees on the course have told us there was significant value for them personally and for their schools in joining.
