Last week would have been my mother’s 80th birthday. I think of her calm wisdom, her willingness to speak out for those without voice in child protection, an ability to set clear boundaries and love for her own children. I am sad that she was taken from us early – I wanted to celebrate her 80th together. I am proud that she held her values keenly, that she was both fierce and soft, and of what she achieved....and I know that there were areas that she wanted more for herself.
Coming from a competitive family with two brothers, I developed a firm, even defensive perspective of ‘woman as equal’ in the workplace…. I wasn’t going to be subject to ‘less than treatment’. With time and evidence that points to an unequal landscape for women, and with a daughter I want to see proudly take her place as both woman and leader, I’ve grown to see the blind-spot in this ‘I am equal’ approach that fails to celebrate being a woman and stopped me fully engaging to make a difference in the space of female leadership.
This led me to create a program specifically for women in education. ‘Own your Leadership Voice’ is an 8-month journey connecting and empowering Women Leaders in Education, across different systems and regions, and as an LSC Education Executive Coach I am delighted to be able to run this under the auspices of @lsceducation, as part of their coaching and training offering.
