The British Junior Academy of Brussels is located in the diplomatic residential area of Brussels and the diverse intake is a reflection of its proximity to the main institutions of the EU, major NGOs and offices of multinational companies.
The school's reputation, since 1994, as a high quality provider of a British style of education is endorsed by their 2019 'Excellent' rating by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). Their ethos is grounded in providing a safe, caring, respectful, tolerant and disciplined environment where high standards prevail in all areas of school life. The school currently has 235 pupils, with a capacity for 350, and a teaching staff of 40. In the last three years BJAB has embarked on an ambitious expansion plan, acquiring additional buildings and opening a new Prep Department for pupils in Year 7 and 8. The school's strategic development continues with the introduction of new provision for Secondary level students.
BJAB's mission is to deliver a broad and balanced education, which enables the individual child to develop to his or her maximum potential, in a dynamic and caring environment. Their class teachers are all first language English speakers, trained or experienced in UK schools. They also have specialist teachers for French, Flemish, Latin, computer science and music. Their style of learning develops young, inquiring minds. It promotes responsibility and involvement in the learning process. Through discovery, questioning, analysis, dialogue, teamwork and individual study pupils develop higher-order thinking skills and the self-discipline essential for their future. The curriculum is broad and balanced. The core subjects of English, mathematics and science have the central position in a diverse and dynamic offering of other subjects. All lessons are in English, except for daily French, and they are expert in providing additional support (EAL) where needed. The school follows the National Curriculum for England, with some adaptations for its international setting and context. This enables benchmarking to UK standards and a smooth transition into the secondary phase.
BJAB is a family-owned school and the Proprietor is looking for a Headteacher to lead the school from September 2022, to succeed their current Headteacher, Sarah White, who has served the school community through many outstanding years of leadership. The school's focus for the coming years will be to continue providing an excellent education to its students, reaching the very highest standards that they are well known for, while also extending BJAB to become an all-through school, for primary and secondary aged students. This will be a wonderful opportunity for an experienced leader to grow and develop this already excellent school.
