Head of Early Childhood Education

Opened in September 2017, BASIS International School Guangzhou is the second BASIS Curriculum School outside of the U.S., and is located in Huangpu Science City, Guangzhou, surrounded by poetic views of the green hillside. The campus covers an area of 16,143 square meters and a building area of 38,000 square meters, boasting a classical Chinese garden style. The campus benefits from a teaching building, a dormitory building and facilities for indoor activities including dancing, gym, table tennis and billiard room. The indoor and outdoor sports area also includes a 300-metre running track, a multi-purpose hall, two basketball courts and one futsal court. BASIS International School Guangzhou is able to accommodate 1,200 students from PreK-1 to Grade 12, including a boarding capacity of 309 students (boarding is open to students at and above Grade 5). 

Since its establishment in 2017, BASIS International School Guangzhou has been recognized as an academically competitive international school in the Pearl River Delta region. The school was accredited by AdvancED in its founding year and has then been approved to implement the AP Capstone Diploma Program. Granted this opportunity, BASIS International School Guangzhou has become the seventh international school in the Chinese mainland and the first in Guangdong Province to offer students this advanced academic program. In addition, BASIS International School Guangzhou is an authorised SAT, AP and PSAT test centre.

Early Childhood Education

The Preschool and Kindergarten is a thriving, happy and successful department of 6 classes with up to 20-25 children in each class, with a wonderful staff of committed and dedicated professionals.

Preschool and Kindergarten are both taught in self-enclosed classrooms. During these years, each classroom has an assigned Subject Expert Teacher Early Childhood Education (SET ECE), a Learning Enhancement Teacher Early Childhood Education (LET ECE) who has earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and who aspires to become an SET ECE, and a dedicated classroom assistant. The SET ECE is responsible for most of the instruction. However, in specialized subjects such as Music and Engineering, a Subject Expert Teacher (SET) may replace the SET ECE.

The preschool learning environment is carefully designed to encourage a child’s natural curiosity to create, discover, and ask questions. Teachers facilitate opportunities for children to interact with materials in a thoughtful manner. They encourage children to ask creative questions, and to use their own reasoning to learn from, and make connections to, the world around them.

In Kindergarten, an SET ECE, an LET ECE, and a dedicated classroom assistant guide students to master the foundations in traditional academic subjects, as well as enrichment courses that help them make connections between their classes. Kindergarten thoroughly prepares students for success throughout the rest of their academic journey by developing basic skills and scholarly habits, and also on understanding the value of learning.
