The International School of Monaco (ISM), located on the port of Monaco, is an international, bilingual, independent day school, which educates over 650 students aged 3 to 18, from over 50 nationalities. The school was founded in 1994 as a not-for-profit association and is governed by a Board of Trustees elected by the School Association, of which all parents are automatically members.
The school is non-selective and accepts all children who are able to benefit from the education they offer, provided that places are available.
ISM offers a broad and balanced education which is academically challenging and sets high expectations for its students. The curriculum begins at Early Years and Primary with a bilingual English/ French programme which is based on a blend of the best of international curricula. ISM’s 50/50 bilingual programme at Early Years and Primary level presents an exciting and unique challenge, as many of the children speak other ‘mother tongue’ languages, and are learning in French and English as their third or even fourth language. In the Middle and Secondary schools, teaching is primarily in English. Students study a bespoke curriculum in Years 7 and 8 which includes language, mathematics, the humanities and sciences as well as creative subjects and physical education. This leads them in the Secondary school, from age 14, to prepare for IGCSEs and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The school has enjoyed a success rate of virtually 100% at IB every year and the average IB Diploma score in 2018 was 34 points. Students go on to a wide range of top universities around the world. An extensive extra-curricular programme is provided which includes sports, music and drama. The school also participates in the International Award, the Model United Nations and numerous community projects.
ISM is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). The school is also an authorised Examination Centre for the Cambridge IGCSE exams and the ABRSM and LAMDA examining boards.
The school is located in fully renovated premises in the port of Monaco, only metres from the stunning marina. A new extension for the Early Years plus a new Cafeteria was opened in September 2015. In addition, there are three Library ‘Learning Hubs’, an IB/IGCSE Study Centre and a Creative and Performing Arts Centre. A brand new Science Centre was inaugurated in September 2016. All the Learning Hubs and classrooms are well-equipped with IT hardware. There is recreational space outdoors including an all-weather sports court and a playground. While the school is currently located in two buildings close to each other, development plans are in place for the school to relocate within the next three years to a brand new, purpose-built facility across the port, which will bring the whole school together on one site.
The school’s mission is to work with families and their children to do everything they can to ensure that the child becomes an academically successful, internationally-minded, caring person and a motivated learner able to communicate effectively using two or more languages and well prepared for the challenges of an ever-changing world.
The Board of Trustees is currently seeking to appoint a dynamic, experienced Director who can lead the school from January 2020 or as soon as available (the Board is prepared to wait for the right candidate and has made provision for an Interim Director, so candidates should not be deterred by the start date). The successful candidate must have demonstrable experience and success in leading high performing schools. They will be an outstanding leader who has a passion for 21st Century education, with a clear and inspirational vision for the school. They will be collaborative and inclusive in their approach, with strong presence and excellent interpersonal skills. They will be expected to drive forward innovation and inspire the school’s community to achieve its mission. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a school through the next exciting phase of its development and growth. Monaco not only offers a stunningly beautiful environment but also a hugely aspirational culture and context.
